How to contact your Members of Congress

In a survey conducted by the Congressional Management Foundation, congressional staffers explained what Members of Congress want to know from constituents when they contact them:

• What actions do you want me to take?

• Why do you want me to do that?

• What are the local impacts?

• What is your personal story connected to the policy?

When you communicate with your representatives in Washington, be brief and make clear you’re a constituent. Not sure what to say? Feel free to start with this sample script:

“Hi, my name is [Name] and I'm a constituent of [Senator/Representative _____ ] from [City]. I'm calling to ask [Senator/Representative _____ ] to [make your ask clear, concise and respectful]."
