Open enrollment

Open enrollment is the process by which Iowa students attend a public school outside the district they live in. Open enrollment rules are set by state statute, and open-enrollment decisions are made the district the student seeks to enroll in. The resident district pays tuition to the receiving district, and in most cases, the student's family is responsible for transporting their student to their out-of-district school. The number of Iowa students open-enrolling to a school outside their district of residence has grown markedly over the last decades.
