More than a quarter-million Iowans who receive federal food assistance benefits could be at risk of going hungry if Congress pursues a Republican plan to cut $230 billion or more from the program over nearly 10 years. One idea would push some SNAP benefit costs to the states – but states like Iowa already face budget cliffs because of big tax cuts for the wealthiest.

More than 40 state and regional organizations in Iowa have asked all six members of the Iowa congressional delegation to protect Medicaid and SNAP in current federal budget negotiations.

An annual report on Iowa's Research Activities Tax Credit once again showed the state's generosity to business, with $54.5 million in credits claimed in 2024, the vast majority to large companies and two-thirds paid out as subsidy checks to companies that owed no state income tax.
